MaggieMudd is an independent ice cream parlor in San Francisco. No chains, no franchises here. Anytime you stop in, chances are you'll run into one of the owners scooping out an ice cream sundae, or writing Happy Birthday on an ice cream cake for you. Or, even more important to the vision and success of the business, scrubbing floors and taking out trash. (We all know that this job is far too difficult for anyone who actually gets PAID to work.)
So, the question has come up quite often. Who the heck is Maggie? Many of our customers seem a bit dazed and confused when they find out that there is not a single Maggie who either works at or owns the joint, although we've had quite a few customers who are Maggies, and one of these was one actually one of our local neighborhood dogs.
(It's actually been quite convenient when telemarketers call up and ask for Maggie. It only works once or twice though. They catch on pretty fast, and then they just ask for a major decision maker. I tell them I don't know any...)
So we usually start out the story like this, providing there are not too many customers waiting to be served (music please, maestro):
Maggie is a young lady who moved in with us one day. She seemed quite destitute, for she had no place to live. Alas, one day, we were packed and set to move away from our then current home to find greener pastures further West. We suddenly found her on our doorstep, an infant sitting before her. Struck down with compassion, we post haste threw open our kitchen door to her. She quickly disappeard, however, to our great surprise, gently bounding down the stairs without a shudder from her petite frame. Aghast, we waited, not knowing what next to do, with but a tiny offspring in our arms. But Maggie again appeared quickly, and along with her came yet another. Down again, up again, and then another. We waited, as Maggie is not one who easily communicates with us, expecting more such similar creatures. Finally, we realized she had completed her mission.
We emptied one of the boxes which was holding such trite items as books, and set it in the cabinet under the sink, an old towel folded and fluffed at the bottom. Maggie and here children settled down, the first long nap of their young lives.
Maggie's children are now all adults. Named Seymore (who is actually a girl), Cordelia, Penelope (who is actually a boy), and Mary. They still live together.
Too bad I'm so darn allergic to cats!
MaggieMudd is really not about cats, even though the name originally comes from a cat. We're really all about ice cream. Whether you're looking for a large helping of Rocky Road on a freshly made waffle cone or an affogato al caffe, then this is the place.
We have over 55 flavors of ice cream and vegan dairy-free cream. We have lots of sundaes, and of course, if you're not willing to follow our culinary wisdom, you can just go ahead and make your own. Really. Just tell us what you want and we promise to make it without any attitude whatsoever.
Try one of our special shakes. With names like Agent Orange, Tarmack, or Green Hornet, you know you can't lose.
If you really want to taste the best that MaggieMudd has to offer, however, you've got to try one of our original Ice Cream Cakes. We also make vegan dairy-free ice cream cakes, so no matter what your lifestyle, we can accomodate. (Unless you just hate sweets, then there's not much we can do.)
Special order or come in to see what we have to offer. We also do photo cakes and character and theme cakes. Click on over to our online catalog to see what kind of a cake we can make for you.
We also have free high speed internet access. We have wireless access that really does work with a PC (it's an Apple AirPort. Occasionally you just need to know a trick or two). We have 7 open ports if you want to bring in your own cable or borrow one of ours.
We are located at 903 Cortland Ave. at Gates. Click here for directions.
